What to Eat Before a Tattoo: Best Foods to Stay Comfortable

Table of Contents

What to eat before a tattoo is more important than many people realize. A balanced meal with protein, complex carbohydrates, and plenty of water will help you stay comfortable throughout your tattoo session.

1. What to eat before a tattoo?

The best thing to eat before a tattoo is a balanced meal with protein, complex carbohydrates, and a small amount of healthy fat. This combination provides steady energy, helps keep your blood sugar stable, and reduces the chance of feeling dizzy or lightheaded during your tattoo session.

Try to eat 1–2 hours before your appointment. This gives your body enough time to digest while ensuring you have plenty of energy during the session. It’s also important to drink plenty of water before you arrive, as staying hydrated helps you feel more comfortable and supports healthy skin.

Good pre-tattoo meal ideas

You don’t need a special diet before getting tattooed. A simple, balanced meal is all you need. Here are a few great options:

  • A bowl of phở with beef or chicken
  • Grilled chicken with rice and vegetables
  • Eggs with whole-grain toast and fresh fruit
  • Oatmeal with banana and peanut butter
  • Greek yogurt with fruit

If you’re traveling in Vietnam, finding a good pre-tattoo meal is easy. A bowl of phở, cơm gà (chicken and rice), or any meal with lean protein, rice, and vegetables will give you steady energy without feeling too heavy before your appointment.

2. What to bring with you?

For shorter tattoo appointments, a good meal beforehand is usually all you need. If your session will last more than 2–3 hours, bringing a few essentials can help you stay comfortable and keep your energy up.

Here’s what we recommend bringing to a tattoo session:

  • A bottle of water to stay hydrated throughout your session.
  • An electrolyte drink to replace fluids, especially if you’ve been walking around Hanoi in the heat or have a longer appointment.
  • Easy-to-eat snacks, such as:
  • Gummy bears
  • Hard candy
  • Granola or protein bars
  • A banana or apple
  • Dried fruit

Water, snacks, and a few essentials can help you stay comfortable

If you’re prone to low blood sugar or dizziness, bring a small sugary snack like candy or gummy bears for a quick energy boost during breaks. DNA Tattoo Studio always has candy available for clients, so you can grab a little something whenever you need it.

For longer tattoo sessions, especially sessions lasting 6–10 hours, DNA Tattoo Studio offers a complimentary meal when it’s time for lunch or dinner. Light snacks and drinks are also available throughout your session to help you stay comfortable and energized. If you need a short break at any time, simply let your artist know, we’re always happy to pause.

3. What to avoid before a tattoo?

A few simple choices before your appointment can help you feel more comfortable during your tattoo session.

  • Don’t arrive on an empty stomach. Eat a balanced meal beforehand to keep your energy and blood sugar stable.
  • Avoid too much caffeine if it makes you feel anxious or lightheaded.
  • Skip alcohol, as it can increase bleeding and dehydration.
  • Avoid heavy, greasy meals that may leave you feeling sluggish.
  • Stay away from foods that cause bloating or gas, especially before longer sessions.
  • Don’t try unfamiliar foods right before your appointment. If you’re traveling in Vietnam, save new dishes for after your tattoo to avoid an upset stomach.

4. Final tips for a comfortable tattoo session

A little preparation goes a long way. Before your appointment, remember to:

  • Get a good night’s sleep so your body is well-rested.
  • Eat a balanced meal 1–2 hours before your session.
  • Drink plenty of water before and during your appointment.
  • Let your tattoo artist know if you’re prone to fainting or low blood sugar.
  • Listen to your body, if you start feeling dizzy or unwell, don’t hesitate to ask for a short break.
