Proper post tattoo care is essential to help your new ink heal smoothly, maintain its color, and prevent irritation. At DNA Tattoo Studio, clients receive guidance on caring for their tattoos through the first 30 days of healing, including managing redness, peeling, and skin recovery for the best results.

1. The first 30 days of post tattoo care: what happens?
Tattoo healing happens in several stages. During the first few days, redness, swelling, peeling, and small amounts of fluid may appear as part of the skin’s natural recovery process. While the outer layer usually heals within 2–4 weeks, proper moisturizing and sun protection are still important to maintain the tattoo’s appearance.
2. Day 1-3: Protect your new tattoo
The first three days are especially important because the tattooed area is still an open wound. Your main goals during this stage are to keep the tattoo clean, minimize irritation and follow the instructions provided by your tattoo artist.
2.1. Follow your artist’s bandage instructions
Your tattoo artist may cover the tattoo with plastic wrap, sterile gauze or a medical-grade adhesive film. Each type of bandage has different removal and replacement requirements.
Traditional plastic wrap or gauze is usually worn for a shorter period, while adhesive tattoo films may remain in place for several days when applied correctly. Do not remove the covering too early unless it becomes loose, damaged, excessively filled with fluid or uncomfortable.
When removing the bandage:
- Wash your hands thoroughly first.
- Peel the covering away slowly and gently.
- Remove adhesive film under warm running water if necessary.
- Do not reuse an old bandage.
- Avoid touching the tattoo with unwashed hands.

2.2 Clean the tattoo gently
After removing the bandage, wash the tattoo carefully with lukewarm water and water. Use clean fingertips to remove dried plasma, excess ink and surface residue. Avoid using washcloths, sponges, brushes or exfoliating products because they can irritate the sensitive skin.
After washing, gently pat the tattoo dry with a clean paper towel. Do not rub the area. Allow it to air-dry briefly before applying a thin layer of the aftercare product recommended by your tattoo artist. Avoid applying a thick layer of ointment.

2.3 Wear loose and clean clothing
Choose loose, breathable and freshly washed clothing while the tattoo is healing. Tight fabric can rub against the skin, stick to the tattoo or remove forming scabs. Clothing made from soft, breathable materials can help reduce friction and allow better airflow. This is particularly important for tattoos placed on the waist, thighs, shoulders, chest, feet or other areas frequently covered by clothing.
You should also change bedding regularly, especially during the first week. Clean sheets help limit exposure to sweat, dust, pet hair and bacteria. If fabric becomes stuck to the tattoo, do not pull it away forcefully.

3. Days 4–7: Handle itching, peeling and scabbing
Between days four and seven, redness and fluid leakage should gradually decrease. The tattoo may begin to feel dry, itchy and slightly tight as the outer skin starts to repair itself.
3.1. Do not scratch your fresh tattoo
Itching is a normal part of skin healing, but scratching can damage the tattooed surface. Fingernails can introduce bacteria, reopen the skin or remove pigment before it has settled properly.
To manage itching safely, you can:
- Apply a thin layer of suitable moisturizer.
- Lightly tap the surrounding skin with clean fingers.
- Wear loose clothing to reduce friction.
- Keep the room cool to limit sweating.
- Use a clean, cool compress for a short period.

3.2. Never pick or peel the scabs
Scabs protect the healing skin underneath. Pulling them off can cause bleeding, infection, uneven pigment loss or permanent scarring.
Allow peeling skin and scabs to fall away naturally during washing or normal daily movement. Some sections of the tattoo may heal faster than others, particularly when the design includes heavy shading, dense color or repeated needlework.
4. Days 8–14: Support the peeling stage
During the second week, peeling, dryness, and a slightly faded appearance may occur as new skin forms over the tattoo. Continue gentle cleaning and moisturizing while avoiding excessive sweating, friction, and prolonged water exposure to protect the healing skin.

5. Days 15–30: Maintain and protect your tattoo
By the third and fourth weeks, most peeling, scabbing and surface irritation should have resolved. The tattoo may still look slightly shiny, dry or less vibrant while the deeper layers of skin continue healing. Maintain a simple skincare routine during this period. Wash the area gently and apply a fragrance-free moisturizer as needed. Avoid aggressive exfoliation until the skin texture has completely returned to normal.
Sun protection is essential for maintaining tattoo color and clarity. However, sunscreen should generally be applied only after the tattoo surface has closed and healed sufficiently. Before that point, keep the tattoo covered with clean, loose clothing and avoid direct sunlight.
